Light
Most light and airCovers the upper part of the eye mesh and blocks the harshest light from above. For horses mainly bothered by sun, flies and dust.
Fly masks with eye patch
Quality fly masks in stretch Lycra with a fixed patch over the eye that needs extra shade, so your horse can be out in daylight with more calm and comfort.

Why a mask with a patch
Horses with uveitis are often very sensitive to light. The patch shields the eye from sun and UV, so the horse is more comfortable outdoors.
The mask keeps flies, dust and dirt away from an eye that is already irritated, and reduces the risk of rubbing against branches, hay and straw.
The healthy eye keeps its bug-eye mesh, which does not touch the eye, so the horse can still see its surroundings and feels secure.
The mask is an aid, not a treatment. Uveitis must always be treated and monitored by a vet.
About uveitis
Equine recurrent uveitis (ERU), also known as moon blindness, is a painful inflammation inside the horse's eye that returns in episodes. Each episode can damage the eye a little more, and the disease is the most common cause of blindness in horses. ERU cannot be cured, but with prompt veterinary treatment, sight can often be preserved.
Strong light and UV, dust and flies can make it easier for a new episode to flare up. That is why it makes sense to shield the eye in everyday life.
Our experience
We have a horse with ERU ourselves. For five years it has worn the mask with a patch every day, all year round, to reduce the light on the affected eye. In that time the horse has had only two relapses. That is far fewer than many owners experience: in horses with ERU, episodes often return months apart, and the interval tends to get shorter as the horse gets older.
The effect of the mask has not been clinically proven, and there is no guarantee of the same result in every horse. Our experience is that it has helped our horse significantly, and we could not find a similar product on the market. That is why we now sew these masks for other horses with the same diagnosis.
The mask can also be used if the horse has a scratch or injury to the cornea and the vet has advised that the eye must not be exposed to direct sunlight.
The mask shields the eye, but it also hides it. So look under the patch every day. A new episode can start quietly, and the sooner it is spotted and treated, the better the chance of preserving sight. If you see a cloudy or bluish eye, squinting, sensitivity to light, tearing, a small pupil or swelling, or if the horse rubs its eye, contact your vet the same day.
Choose your patch
The patch is sewn on top of the eye mesh. The dotted line in the photos shows where the patch ends. If you are unsure what suits your horse, ask your vet or write to us.
Covers the upper part of the eye mesh and blocks the harshest light from above. For horses mainly bothered by sun, flies and dust.
Reaches about halfway down the eye mesh and shades light from above and from the side. The horse can still see down towards the ground.
Covers the eye mesh all the way down to the edge, keeping the eye in shade. For periods when the eye is very sore or sensitive to light.
Handmade
Every patch is measured, fitted and sewn on by hand, so it covers exactly as much of the eye as you have chosen. The patch is made from a matte, sturdy material that keeps the light out, and it is fixed on top of the eye mesh so it cannot shift.
The healthy eye keeps its normal mesh, so the horse still has a clear view to one side.
Because each mask is made individually and not mass-produced, the price is higher than for a standard off-the-shelf fly mask.
